Memorial Blowing of Trumpets: A Call to Remember and Awaken

September 11 at sunset – September 12 at sunset
As the sun set on September 11, we entered another appointed holy day of Yahweh: the Memorial Blowing of Trumpets, observed on the first day of the seventh biblical month. This sacred day continues until sunset on September 12.
Yahweh established this day among His appointed times, declaring:
“And Yahweh spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto Yahweh.”— Leviticus 23:23–25
Numbers gives the command again:
“And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work: it is a day of blowing the trumpets unto you.”— Numbers 29:1
What Is the Memorial Blowing of Trumpets?
Physically, this is a Sabbath and holy convocation marked by the sounding of trumpets. Israel (the Israelites) was commanded to stop ordinary labor, assemble before Yahweh, and mark the day by the sound of the trumpet.
But Yahweh did not call it simply a day of blowing. He called it a memorial.
A memorial causes something to be remembered, brought back to consciousness, and placed before the mind again. The trumpet therefore becomes more than a sound. It announces something that interrupts ordinary life and demands attention.
Throughout Scripture, trumpets are connected with gathering, warning, announcing, movement, preparation, and the presence and activity of Yahweh. When the trumpet sounds, the people are being called to hear, recognize, remember, and respond.
The Trumpet Within Us
This gives the Memorial Blowing of Trumpets a powerful mental and spiritual meaning.
There are times when we can become spiritually asleep while still moving through the activities of everyday life. Our minds become occupied, our attention becomes scattered, and we can lose awareness of what Yahweh is doing within us.
Then comes the sound of the trumpet.
Spiritually, the trumpet represents a call to consciousness. It calls us to awaken, to listen again, to examine where we are, and to bring our minds back into alignment with Yahweh.
Mentally, it is an interruption of old patterns of thought. The trumpet says: Pay attention. Something is being announced. Something must be remembered. Something requires a response.
And there is something especially significant about Yahweh placing this memorial at the entrance of the seventh month. Seven repeatedly brings us into the biblical language of completion, fullness, Sabbath, covenant, and sacred order. The seventh month opens with a sound—a call that prepares the people for the sacred appointments that follow.
Therefore, the Memorial Blowing of Trumpets is both an outward observance and an inward invitation. The trumpet sounds outwardly, but its message must be heard inwardly.
What in me needs to awaken?
What has Yahweh spoken that I need to remember?
What old thought must I stop following?
What is Yahweh calling me to hear now?
On this holy day, we honor Yahweh by stopping, remembering, listening, and becoming conscious again of His voice and His work within us.
The Trumpet Is Sounding
As we honor this sacred appointed time, may we remember what the trumpet calls us to do: awaken, listen, remember, and respond to Yahweh. May its sound call our minds back into alignment, stir our spirits, and prepare us for what Yahweh is revealing and bringing forth.
Answering the Call
The Memorial Blowing of Trumpets reminds us that Yahweh has appointed moments when He calls His people to stop, remember, listen, and awaken. The trumpet breaks through the ordinary noise of life and calls our attention back to what is sacred.
As we honor this High Holy Day, may we not only hear the trumpet with our ears, but recognize its message within ourselves. May we become more conscious of Yahweh’s presence, more attentive to His direction, and more willing to move when He calls.
The sound is a memorial, but it is also a call forward.
May we remember what Yahweh has spoken.
May we awaken to what Yahweh is doing.
May we prepare ourselves for what is yet to come.
