Day of Atonement: A Sabbath of Atonement and Realignment
Beginning this evening, September 20, and continuing through September 21, we honor the Day of Atonement, one of Yahweh’s appointed holy days.
Yahweh established the Day of Atonement for the tenth day of the seventh month:
“Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls…”— Leviticus 23:27
The Day of Atonement is a solemn Sabbath of rest. Yahweh commands that no work be done on this day. It is a time set apart from our ordinary activities so that our attention can be turned toward Yahweh.
Scripture also commands us to afflict our souls. Traditionally, this is observed through fasting, humbling ourselves before Yahweh, prayer, repentance, and self-examination. The Day of Atonement is the one appointed day in Yahweh’s calendar specifically associated with this required fasting and affliction of the soul. We DO NOT eat nor drink for 24 hours from sunset to sunset.
“It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls…”— Leviticus 23:32
This sacred day gives us an opportunity to examine ourselves, seek forgiveness, make necessary corrections, and realign ourselves with Yahweh. Atonement carries the beautiful purpose of reconciliation—restoring what has been separated and bringing us again into oneness and right relationship with Yahweh.
The Day of Atonement is often understood as the Sabbath of Sabbaths—a day of complete rest, humility, repentance, fasting, prayer, and drawing near to Yahweh.
From sunset on the evening of September 20 to sunset on September 21, we fast and pray, setting aside the ordinary and honoring this sacred appointment with Yahweh.
May this Day of Atonement be a time of cleansing, forgiveness, realignment, and renewed oneness with Yahweh.
The Kingdom of Shalom
Isaiah 2:2–3
“And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the house of Yahweh shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of Yahweh, to the house of the Elohim of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem.”
Micah 4:1–2
